How many slides should a presentation have

A deck sent by email runs 8 to 12 slides, one shown at a meeting 12 to 20. Above that the reader stops reading and starts scrolling.

The number of slides matters less than how much sits on each one. A slide with one thought and one image reads in seconds. A slide with a paragraph of text will not be read at all if somebody is speaking next to it.

A good measure is the mute test. If the deck sent without your commentary makes no sense, it is too thin. If people read it during your talk instead of listening, it is too dense. Hence two versions: one to send, one for the meeting.

Supporting material, price lists and technical detail are worth moving to the end, behind the contact slide. They are then at hand without cluttering the main argument.
