Does a small company need a visual identity

It needs consistency, not a thick document. A correct logo, two colours, one typeface and the discipline to use them everywhere is enough.

The effect comes from repetition, not from the number of pages in a document. A company using one set of colours on the site, in email, on the invoice and on the van looks larger and better organised than it is.

The order matters. First the things a customer sees daily: the website, the offer, the invoice, the email signature. Materials printed once a year can wait.

For a sole trader the package that comes with a website is usually enough. A full identity starts paying off once more than one person is making the materials.
