What Is a CMS and When You Really Need One

Technology·4 min read

A CMS (Content Management System) is a panel that lets you edit your site's content yourself - add posts, change text and images - without knowing any code.

What a CMS gives you

Independence: you change content whenever you want, without waiting for a developer. That's convenient when you update the site often - e.g., you run a blog, update your offer, or add new work.

When it's not needed

A simple business-card site that changes once every six months doesn't need an extensive panel. Sometimes it's cheaper and faster to commission a minor change than to maintain a whole system that has to be kept updated.

Convenience vs. simplicity

A CMS is convenient, but it's also an extra layer that has to be maintained and secured. The choice depends on how often you'll genuinely be editing content.

In brief

  • CMS = editing content yourself without a developer.
  • It's useful for frequent changes (blog, offer).
  • For a simple business-card site it can be an unnecessary complication.
