What Is a CTA and Why It Determines Conversion

Conversion·4 min read

A CTA (call to action) is the element that tells the visitor what to do next: "Order," "Ask for a quote," "Download." It sounds trivial, but it's often the difference between a site that sells and one that just looks nice.

Why the CTA matters so much

People on a site act most readily when they know exactly what to do. The lack of a clear CTA leaves them with the question "and now what?" - and then they usually just leave.

A good CTA reduces the mental effort of deciding: one clear next step instead of ten options.

How to write an effective CTA

Start with a verb and something specific ("Order a website," "Calculate a quote"), not vague terms ("Submit"). Show the benefit or lower the risk ("Free quote," "No obligation").

Make the CTA stand out visually - a contrasting color, a big enough button, plenty of space around it.

One main CTA per screen

When five equally weighted buttons compete for attention, none of them wins. Choose one main action and build the section around it. The rest can be less prominent.

In brief

  • A CTA tells the customer what to do next - and genuinely determines conversion.
  • Verb + benefit + visual contrast.
  • One main CTA per screen works better than five.
